After graduating summa cum laude from Dartmouth College, he earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Reed then served a surgical residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital, followed by a thoracic surgical fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.

During his residency, he spent three years as a surgical oncology research fellow at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, studying cell cycle control and chemotherapeutic response.
